ENDURE

What can I say this is a very interesting process I feel like a creature with 4 different brains and 32 arms. It is crazy real crazy but God's grace people and I declare that over everyone life right now.
Plenty grace plus more.

Endure this process
Don't worry Kavita. You will make it through. I am also in my own little boat fighting very big waves. But a small rest period is on it's way fear not!!
Strength to you all!!!
Renee

Eye of the Tiger

Hey Guys,

Do you hear that? Its waves crashing and thunder and rain and lightning and there's this tiny boat in the midst of the chaos. Will I survive this onslaught or will I just sink. Don't know but I am fighting, bailing out water and praying, Boy am I praying.

Doing three class assignments at once. That was this week. Lacking sleep. (Sharon, girl, 5hrs in 2 days. Don't know how you managing) Luckily our group has finished everything for Friday.

Yes, one down, but I think the storm is getting worst because two more assignments to handle.

Advance Research is taking a lot out of me and Capstone, well, atleast I am happy where I've reached but I have so much left to do that its difficult.

But I am holding strong because you guys in class have been giving me so much inspiration by fighting your own storms. Thanks for your ongoing guidance and support.

Take care and soon we'll all be seeing rainbows.

Kavita.

Last Blog

Maybe next students cold be encouraged to blog from semester 1. This was a new experience for me - a positive one, but one that I think we needed to be prepared for in a different way. However that said - it's all good. It seems though that this will be the last blog.
As requested I am attempting to post all relevant docs for myself Chiwale and Michael R.

Unfortunately the system is not allowing me to upload our documents to the blog.
They will come to Annabelle and Frances Ann via email as well as hard copy at ARCON.

Bye bye my blog brothers and sisters.

Sigh

Hi,

How is everyone? I hope you are all well. On my last post, I said I was shooting my commercial. Well I am afraid that I was unable to achieve the filmic look I wanted and as such would have to re-shoot in order to get the look I wanted. Thankfully, I am able to submit my Capstone for marking in the producing class.

As for Capstone, on Saturday every thing that could go wrong did go wrong. Things that could not go wrong, did go wrong. Who is Freud again? He missed some vital points. Had it not been for my cast and crew who kept me going when I had lost almost all hope, I do not know what I would have done. Michael R, Michael C, Kavita and my sister. Again thank you and I do hope that the final project I hand in (I hope on time) will do you guys justice and make you proud you were part of the shoot.

Sky of Grey.

Hi guys,

How is everyone doing? Hope all is well.

I am trying to cope. The group's producing project has gone all wrong. I now know how it feels when you can't get things your way even when you compromise. Eteck has officially let us down twice by cancelling the last two weekends. Now it is impossible to get it done on time for class. But we have to get it done since we have given eteck our word. As Sharon has advised me, we will have to do renegotiations since they were the ones to set us back.

In the meantime, I (and I am sure most of my colleagues as well) am struggling with our individual Capstone projects. I am lucky in that I have finished all my filming two weeks back and have just finished most of my ADR. I just have to do one line (repetition of one word) with my actress. Trying to cheat this in post though. My aim is to try to finish edit my project both visuals and sound this weekend and do all my special effects so that next week, I can do titles and end credits. Notice I said TRYING.

As for my other courses, tears will be shed. But remember after rain there will always be a rainbow.

Now for the positives. Capstone Long is fantastic. The proposal is done and we are working on casting and location. We also have initiatives for funding. So everyone cross your fingers. (Trying to get only the small amount of $350,000) I know some of you might laugh, but the key thing is we believe we can do it. I am really anxious and rearing to go with this project.

Hope everyone is coping well and again if anyone needs a hand with anything feel free to ask, will try my best to help in whatever way I can.

Take care and Happy Producing,
Kavita.

This is not a fete in here this is madness

We could only continue to try, till the last breath. Images of the blood sweat and tears that produces the madness. Thanks to all the hands that helped to make the load lighter. We press on with a few more things still to be shot. Just got in additional drive space so that editing can begin as soon as a camera is signed out. Everything else still happens with full force like: cheques to collect, other people wuk to do, gas and phone bills, flow and light bills etc etc. Jah guide us all

Learning learning learning

A still from behind the scenes of my 5 minute video. We were in CLL for 12 hours and I still did not get all the stuff I wanted. Shooting again hopefully this weekend. I am really happy with the experience so far and it has concreted my desire for doing this. But it has taught me that I am still quite a 'toddler' in this movie-thing. I need to do this a lot more times to get the hang of putting all of this together and getting it halfway near want I envisioned. It hurts my heart to know that I can't get to do this to the full extent because of time, equipment restrictions/limitations, issues with actors , etc.
Anyway, I am now about to turn back to the mountain of projects that loom behind me. Sharon girl...my laundry pile is also getting higher.
Thank God for God and coffee! Press on people!

busy

SO mush things to do. Have to re-edit the short minute film for producing class, have to finish my capstone (still need to shoot more of the script), I need money to pay my actors, and still I have other classes to attained.

more crucial things to get and I am fighting a flu.......deadline what

So Little Time

So many of us have complained that we can only do so much in any given time. And it is true. There are too many assignments and too many subjects in any given time. I truly wish that we had an extra in the beginning of the holidays to do our short film but alas...

Now the problem is, I have confirmed my script and had started shooting. Now my actress has decided she is tired of being bruised and battered and wants a change in script. Great! What happened to all the hours I spent shooting before. Maybe I can still incorporate it. So I have finally redone the script and it meets her approval. Sigh, I hate the star system! Come to think of it, I prefer this script. I don't have to worry about matching the lighting. So we both benefit. My lead actor have already confirmed so now its just to get everybody same day and time and shoot. But I love my visuals from before too much too give them up. I will incorporate them one way or another. Since time is limited I want to shoot in one or two days maximum. So I'm going to pull a Hitchcock. I'm going to "cut in camera". That way I don't have much editing to do. Thanks Dr. Mier for introducing him to me. I usually love to have lots of shots so that I can select, but then I end up with soo many I don't know which to choose. Well, that's it for Capstone.

Now, as for my 20 second ad for this course. Guess what, I'm shooting it today, yeah! I have all the equipment and everything so by midnight tonight, I will have finished shooting. It feels soo good to have at least one script in the pan, you can't imagine.

That's it for now. Now to shoot that ad. Guys, I hope (against the odds, I kno, I'm here) that everyone is doing fine with their workload.

Wishing you all the best,

Resh.

Week 10 - HELP!!!!

Hi Guys,

HELP!!!!!!!!

I think this succinctly summarises what I and by extension many of us feel at this point in time in the semester. I really don't know how some of you are managing to do all our projects at the same time. I find myself two days or even the day before realising that there is a deadine and have been pushing back my scheduled work to finish up the due assignment. With this constantly happening in a cycle I always have work upon work to do and the cycle is never ending.

I also agree with Annabelle, it is only when we fall in pitfalls are we able to learn how to climb out and avoid them the when they come up. Additionally, I like a good challenge, no wait, I like overcoming a challenge, not the challenge itself.

This week I have two assignments coming back to back. I have a devastatingly long essay, 2,5oo words to do for Friday and I have planning to collaborate with my group members for producing class for our rehearsal/filming for Friday and Saturday. We have to organise any additional crew we need to get and we need to finalise shot list and storyboard. And then added to that my Capstone short has been put on the back burner for this week so editing will have to wait. Compromise, compromise, compromise. Not a word I often use with my work but I am trying to pull out silver linings wherever I can. And talk about trying to manage it all. Stress!!!! BUT... Thanks to everyone in class, their generosity and constant words of comfort and advice and maybe even knowing that we are all chaotic together is somewhat calming to heart. Thanks guys for being the best bunch of filmmakers ever.

PS If anyone needs help with anything please email or call, will try my best to help out in anyway I can.

And remember Happy Producing.

Are we there yet?

Amidst all the crazy deadlines and surmounting pressures, one can hardly look up from the plough without feeling despair. Have we accomplished much? Yes. BUt in relation to the tasks that we were set to accomplish, we still have much more to do in the next 3-4 weeks. Where has the time gone?
Yet as we face these challenges of time and the changing factors around us including work, family, illness and other issues we can not help but feel a sense of accomplishment when one task is completed or even halfway completed.

It has filled me with a great sense of exhiliration and jubilation that i was able to shoot at least two of the scenes for my individual capstone film last Saturday. With much help from Naomi, Chiwale and Dionne whom I owe much thanks and a little encouragement from Sigmond.
I always appreciate the creativity of teamwork and will always cherish the fact that my work doesn't just belong to me, but to all those who helped. It is always amazing to see a team get excited about a project that you care about..it is indeed one of the best feelings in this job!!!!!!

I have much more to say about the process of being a producer/director since i haven't blogged in several weeks ...but for now i take my leave.

much peace

BUDGET TEMPLATE

Dear Ms. Solomon,

As always it was a pleasure having you and we would like to thank you for the wonderful session.

I have been looking for a budget template and while I have found those with the Above the Line costs clearly defined, I'm afraid none has the Below the Line costs marked off so I do not know which costs are Below the line. Does insurance, advertising etc fall under this? While I can do the budget without these headings, I prefer to do it with them the reason being, should we get into the industry, this is the format we will have to use.

As such, would it be possible for you to send us a copy of a budget you may have which clearly has both indicated?

Thank you very much,

Reshma

The time draws nearer

Thank you for everything Miss Frances!
I truly wish I were at the last class. I am getting ready to do my 5min video for Capstone sems 1. I am doing the producing thing...organising and ensuring all parts come together and run smoothly. I got through with the permissions for my location. YAY! Rehearsals with the actors has been so far very good. My script keeps getting rewritten (small rewrites but taxing on my little printer) I am currently sourcing props for the set and other items for wardrobe. I am nervous and really excited at the same time. What a combo. Hopefully I shall post some production pics for you to look at. If my classmates are anywhere as nervous as I am I wish you guys all the best in your productions and in juggling your other school work.

Thanks etc and bye...

CONCEPT

I am no longer with my group and am now working on my own. This has presented me with the opportunity to spearhead my own project. While I am very passionate about the original proposal which I submitted to Ms. Alcazar, I am afraid that it might be a little hectic at this point to do with its multiple locations and interviews however brief they may be. I also need to complete my Capstone project and other assignments.

As such, I am going to do another project in a field in which I am very much interested in; advertising. The concept has been finalized and the lead cast and crew have already been selected. It is simply a matter of planning the final phases and execution.

I will keep you informed and updated as time goes by.

I look forward to reading my fellow students posts.

We go boldly

In taking the “slipping slipper” one step closer to being a produced reality, I spoke with Christopher Laird of Gayelle TV regarding TV stations airing the pieces as public service announcements. He believes that with too many product placements within the PSA, broadcasters would probably treat it as advertising and call for airing money.

The approach then could possibly be getting sponsors to stand back a bit and take credit simply as a conscious and responsible corporate entity. Chris feels that in this manner stations might be more inclined to run it as PSA.

The perfect equation is one in which

1-we make stakeholders at Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex happy with a good video that is able to reach the widest audience i.e. on tape/DVD playback at health facilities and doctor’s offices, internet etc as well as airing on national/regional TV.

2-encourace broadcasters to partner with this effort and

3-make some money in the process with opportunities to do it again.

This project is doable.

The big challenge is balancing the time between this capstone long and short and other assignments and projects.

Week 13 is almost at hand.

We go boldly – one day at a time.

First Meeting at Eteck

Hi Everyone, Hope all is well.

Today we had our first meeting with Eteck. It was a bit intimidating because we did not know what to expect. We actually held hands and prayed that all would go well with the meeting and... It was GREAT!!!! We realised that Eteck was just as enthusiastic about the project as we were. They agreed with our interpretation of the project so much so that they now want to change some of subject matter of the script. YES you read right. They want to change the script. We told them okay provided they could email the "slight" changes by Friday or else. This is the first hurdle we have to overcome and we agreed collectively to allow this and THIS ALONE to slide since we have not given them contracts to sign but before anything else comes up they would have signed contracts so that things go the way we want it. I know this seems harsh but it has to be done for a successful production. (I am slowly learning how to put my foot down. One step closer to being a producer.) Additionally, I could get the feeling that they all know what they are about especially the finance person who tried to pretend she did not, but she does. So she thinks she is going to get the sweetheart deal out of us and we are going along but it will all be stated in the contracts. I know this is a bit sneaky but essential. Okay everything other than the sneakiness was fantastic. They were cooperative with showing us where we could use in the organisation for filming and are basically giving us whatever we want, BUT I am keeping my guard up, not because I don't trust them but because you never know what can happen.

From today's meeting I learnt a heck of alot about being a producer.
1) You have to do what you have to do to get the job done. Even if it is being sneaky but trying to keep it all ethical.
2) Producing your own project is very different from producing work for a client. DEFINITELY NO slip ups can happen. Have to compromise to what client wants although I am trying to take a Hitchcock approach: to be creative despite the studio (client) pressure.
3) Organisation is key. Without organisation there would be chaos and chaos means that very little can get done and efficiency goes out the window. Everything should work like clockwork or else there would be failure and failure is not an option.

OKAY I have more to write but I will stop writing now because I have to leave some things for the others in the group to say. Anyone can add to the list I was making and at the end we could develop commandments for producing. What do you guys think?

Take care and Happy Producing,

Kavita.

May not make it

I don't know if I can make it to tomorrow's class, because it is conflicting with some other commitments that I have to take care of. However I will try to move around some stuff to make something happen, hopefully. I don't know how much of a presentation my group will give since we have problems getting together because of all our other commitments.

Audio Session 2

Sorry to be putting this up so late, but I got caught up in other school work, :) Well on Thursday 22nd October, we did a follow up on the audio recording needed for the Ole boy pilot, this time Raycy and I were to the voices recorded, let me just say how hard it is to be an audio engineer and a Voice over at the same time, but I guess anything for the grade. Now that I'm ahead of my work for producer class, It's time for me to go back to my other subjects, Holla...

Monday's class

Unfortunately due to commitments made since August, I will not be unable to attend Monday's class. I hope all goes well with my group and all of the other group's presentations. I know I will be missing a great class and hope that any and all handouts and reading materials can be made available to me.

Monday

Hi Class,

I'm looking forward to seeing you all on Monday. We will do Case Studies, as we did not get a chance to do that last time around. So please come prepared to present your projects, including where you are with it now, and any challenges you are facing at the moment.

For each project, please make 10 or so photocopies of : the proposal, the contracts, the schedule, budget if available and any other paperwork that you have completed. These will form the basis of the discussion that we will have about each project.

Just a reminder as that if you are late, you will be marked absent. As you know 10 % of the final mark is based on Attendance.  Also, a portion of the mark for each Assignment is based on class presentations. So, if you are absent for the presentations, you will not get full marks for the Assignment, even if you are part of a group that is represented.

Best wishes

Update Week 7

Hi Guys,

Hope all is going well for everyone.

I think it is a stretch having us all register companies for our projects. But I understand that one way of learning is by doing. Luckily our group has managed another way of legalising the process by using Naomi's existing company and we are in the process of drawing up contracts which brings in the other members of our group into the company. We think the best way to do this is by having Naomi's company hire us to head this project.

One complication we are facing though is actually getting the various contracts signed by all involved in the project. As you may know, we are working on ads for E-teck and have now succeeded in setting up a meeting with them on Wednesday to finalise the goals of the project and what is expected of all involved. At this meeting we intend to speed up the process by getting them to sign some of the contracts we need and schedule a meeting with all those involved (eg. actors, additional crew, etc). It is only at that meeting would we be able to get the rest of the contracts signed.

Well that's were we're at. Getting there slowly but surely.

Sorry for writing a book and...
Happy Producing.

Kavita.
Need clarification. Are we to submit signed contracts or just the drafted contacts for our companies?

CONTRACTS IN HAND

Please sign on the dotted line!
The power of negotiating with a good contract. I am discovering or rather reenforcing the fact that a good budget can help you get anything (almost) alongside a well thought out contract. I have been lobbying for permission to shoot at a location and made better head way by introducing a contract to the caretaker. Working out terms and payments makes the entire teaching on contracts and budgeting so much more solid.

Audio Recording

On Sunday the 18th, 2009 we did an audio recording for the Ole Boy. Where Fidel was one of the voices and Sharon sourced the voice of ole boy charles. Andre was transportation (thanks Dre) for the day and basically the VO's were recorded by my house since I have to he equipment to facilitate it, where I served as sound engineer for the day.

Project Update.

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to give you all an update. Right now, we have sent out the proposal to our clients and are awaiting their response. We want to also set up a meeting with them ASAP so that we can move on to the next phase which will be planning and implementation. Hoping all goes well and we will be able to move on without much problems. (You know "Nothing worth doing is ever easy".) Have a great weekend and happy producing.

What 2 say boy.....

Words can not descibe the impact our class on Saturday has made on me. It was an eye opening and informative session worth all the hours spent. When I got home on Saturday my mind began racing, trying to put things into perspective. My conclusion... Holy I have alot of work to do in terms of putting things in order now that we know what are the does and donts.

A producers job is never ending, its a challenge but rewarding at the same time......strange how those two words are in the same sentence hmm.

Anywho we have submitted our proposal to our clients and are awaiting their response and date for our meeting with them. We have also done a budget and started & almost completing our script breakdown.

That all for now folks
njah

Thank you

Hello Trinidad,

Just a note to let you know I am back in Barbados.

I wanted to thanks particularly Sigmond and Jimmel for driving me to class and back, and to the airport this morning.  As well as the trio who picked me up from the airport on Friday ( I can't remember the names).

It was much appreciated!

See you soon,
Frances-Anne

From Annabelle

Hi everyone, I have only just been signed in to blog so haven't been able to send notes on last week's class on script breakdown - enjoyed meeting you all and look forward to tomorrow...
i am planning to tackle scheduling and cashflow if we can do all that in one session and to review any questions/problems from previous sessions....i know you are all really busy ..........but i hope all this information will be helpful to your capstone projects ... and beyond.......

Saturday's class notes

Hello Everyone,

Thanks so much for the class on Saturday - it was lovely to see you all. I'm glad that they information was useful.

I have to get ready to fly back to Barbados in an hour so I will send more detailed notes later if necessary.

But briefly-

Here are the due dates for your Producer assignments:

1) Proposal................................ due October 14th

2) Contracts & Legal Documents............. due October 23rd

3) Script Breakdown & Scheduling........... due October 28th

4) Budget & Cash Flow...................... due November 13th

5) Post production/Delivery......................... semester deadline for university assignments (possibly late November... to be confirmed)
Proposals

SOME NOTES ON WHAT WAS COVERED ON SATURDAY

CONTRACTS: You need to set up a company or ENTITY to house the project. Transfer all the rights in the project to the Entity. And then the Production entity makes contracts with everyone: cast crew, suppliers, investors etc.  You guys made very through lists of all the contracts you need. For specific examples you can find online.

BUDGETTING: The template we used was EP Budgetting which you have to buy, but Renee said she found a template online that is just as detailed. Please can you send it to everyone?

PROPOSALS: Your proposals are due this week. Please post to blog.

SPONSORSHIP: I will try to find a better Sponsorshup template than the one I gave out. The most important part of it is the Sponsorship Benefits (tiered ie Platinum, Gold, Silver, etc) that articulate what advertising you will provide in exchange for how much money.

Thats it for now. I'm sure Annabelle will be able to help you with all your other questions and I will see you on the 26th October.

PS Some people are still not signed up to the blog. Can you tell them to send me their emails? I have unprivatted the blog so people can see it who are not signed up.

Thanks, best wishes
Frances-Anne

Proposal for ‘Imagine what it can do for you…’

TREATMENT

THE IDEA/CONCEPT:

“Imagine what it can do for you…” is a series of 4 short 30 sec infomercials. These would inform the employees of E-teck about the various applications of two newly installed computer programs, “Process Manager” and “Objective”. Additionally, these infomercials would seek to help the employees to enhance their performance, efficiency and organizational skills, which would in turn relieve on-the-job stress and make their work lives easier.

Sometimes it could be so frustrating. Thanks to Objective that is no more. Workflows automatically email meeting requests for approval. Once the approval is granted, it forwards the document to admin along with a notice that it has arrived so that they can complete the process. No more running around...I can do it all with just a click of my mouse!

( as this is demonstrated)

The workflow feature in Objective is so useful...When I create a new project it automatically creates all the required subfolders so that project data is stored in the same way every time. More than that I can access templates for the documents that I need to create, as well as use historic documents from past projects as examples. The best part is that I can use aliases and saved searches to allow me to see the information the way I want it. Great! Don't forget to met me at lunch.

When showing the many capabilities of the software his voice over can be heard..

He moves away and camera follows him down the hallway he passes Sita, camera follows Sita as she moves quickly to her desk.

INFORMERCIAL #3

Sita Ramlogan is XXXXXXXXX

SITA RAMLOGAN

Hello I'm Sita Ramlogan, I remember this one time...my manager needed me to find a contract document from a project that was completed back in 2005. In 2005 I was just finishing my degree...I didn't even know about eTeck. I literally spent hours searching through drawer after drawer in the eight cabinets that house our department records...If only I had Objective back then.

MONTAGE: CLOSE UP: Sita searching through tons and tons of files.

SITA RAMLOGAN

(demonstrates)

Objective's repository feature allows me to map the location of the physical file against the electronic version so that I always know where all my documents are. No more tedious searching. Everything I need is always at my fingertips!

Presented on full screen.

SITA VOICE OVER

I used to have a mortal fear about losing documents...I was burned by that before and it wasn't happening to me again. To protect myself I used to make, save and keep personal copies of everything. It was a mess...all this documentation I had to be responsible for.

MEDIUM SHOTS:

Sita Photocoping

Sita's Desk getting full of files

All the files on Sita's desk collapses on her.

SITA RAMLOGAN

Not anymore though. Since objective came along I don't have to be afraid of losing anything. The electronic copy of the document is always there, safe and secure; and if I need the physical copy, I can get that too - thanks Objective....if it works for me, imagines what it can do for you.

She smiles and goes back to work.
